Description
Position Summary
The Finance Director oversees all financial operations of AABE, ensuring sound fiscal management, transparency, and compliance with nonprofit financial standards. This role serves as a strategic partner to the President & CEO and the Board of Directors—particularly the Finance and Audit Committee—and supports organizational growth, sustainability, and accountability across national and chapter operations.
The Finance Director leads budgeting, financial reporting, audits, cash flow management, internal controls, and regulatory compliance, while supporting diversified revenue streams including membership dues, sponsorships, conferences, grants, and philanthropic contributions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
Serve as the principal financial advisor to the President & CEO and the Board of Directors, including the Finance and Audit Committee.
Develop, manage, and monitor annual operating and program budgets in the $3–5 million range.
Provide financial analysis, forecasting, and scenario planning to support strategic decision-making.
Support long-term financial sustainability, including reserve and liquidity planning.
Financial Operations & Reporting
Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and account reconciliations.
Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Prepare clear and actionable financial reports for Board and committee meetings.
Monitor cash flow, investments, and banking relationships.
Reconcile financial systems with QuickBooks to ensure reporting accuracy and data integrity.
Compliance, Audit & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and nonprofit accounting standards.
Lead the annual audit process and preparation of IRS Form 990.
Maintain and strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
Ensure compliance with grant, sponsorship, and donor restrictions.
Provide financial oversight for grants, including budgeting, tracking restricted funds, monitoring allowability, and ensuring accurate and timely grant financial reporting.
Partner with program staff to support grant proposals, budgets, reimbursements, and funder reporting requirements.
Membership, Events & Chapter Financial Oversight
Oversee financial systems related to membership dues, sponsorships, and national conferences.
Provide guidance and oversight for chapter financial reporting and compliance, as applicable.
Support standardized financial practices across the national organization and local chapters.
Systems & Process Improvement
Oversee financial systems and software, including QuickBooks, CRM, and membership platforms.
Improve financial processes to enhance efficiency, transparency, and scalability.
Partner with staff to strengthen financial literacy and budget management across departments.
Team & Vendor Management
Supervise finance staff and/or outsourced accounting providers.
Manage relationships with auditors, tax preparers, banks, and insurance providers.
Requirements
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
7–10 years of progressive financial management experience.
Demonstrated experience with QuickBooks (required); experience with Stripe, Bill.com, or similar platforms is a plus.
Nonprofit finance experience, preferably within membership-based organizations.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, audits, and IRS Form 990.
Experience managing organizational budgets in the $3–5 million range.
Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
Preferred
CPA and/or MBA.
Experience working closely with boards of directors and finance committees.
Familiarity with chapter-based or federated nonprofit structures.
Experience managing a diverse set of revenue streams (membership, sponsorships, events, and grants).
